- What is a clearing firm?
Investors Capital clears through Pershing LLC, a division of Bank of New York

A clearing firm is usually a member of all the national stock exchanges, such as
New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ, which allows it to place trades, settle accounts,
and match real-time buyers and sellers of securities. Many smaller investment firms
do not have the capability to execute stock trades on their own, so they go through
a clearing firm to conduct the business for their clients. Hence, the terminology:
"clear" through a clearing firm. Some firms have their own clearing operations and
can clear their own trades. They are called “self-clearing”.
