Founder Ted Charles entered the field of financial services as a
life insurance agent with National Life of Vermont. After leading the company in
sales, he left to become the Managing Director of Eastern Capital Securities, an
international investment-banking firm based in Boston and London. Ted was responsible
for directing the fixed-income and insurance divisions. He also spent several years
with Life USA prior to founding Investors Capital.
Ted felt compelled to start his own independent Broker/Dealer because he wanted
to give investment professionals an opportunity to operate in a truly independent
environment, free from product bias. In his own career selling insurance, Ted had
approached management with the idea of the fee-based advisory practice, but this
concept was rejected.
So, he decided to find a better way. He did so in creating Investors Capital
Corporation in 1992.
He brought Tim Murphy on board in 1994, and the rest is history. Together, they
formed a premier independent broker/dealer that is among the most innovative and
respected firms in the industry.
I remember to this day the phone call from Ted back in
1992. He told me that he was going to start a broker/ dealer built by reps for reps.
It took me two seconds to jump on board, and the rest is history.
