Underwriter
Usually an investment dealer who agrees to buy all or part of a new security issue from a firm. An underwriter buys with the hopes that the securities can be resold to the public at a higher price.

Unemployment Rate
The percentage of people in the work force who aren't working and are looking for jobs. The numbers are compiled monthly by the Labor Department and are adjusted for seasonal variations. Two rates are distributed: one for the civilian work force and one for the overall work force.

Unit Investment Trust
A fixed portfolio of stocks or bonds with a specific maturity date. Generally sold by brokers.

Unit Investment Trust (UIT)
Investment vehicle registered with the SEC under the Investment Company Act of 1940, that purchases a fixed portfolio of securities, such as corporate, municipal or government bonds, common stock or preferred stock.

Unlisted Stocks
Stocks not listed for trading on an exchange which are traded over the counter between brokers.

Up tick
Transaction executed at a price higher than the preceding transaction in that security.
